2010 National Science Week school grant recipients

Congratulations to the following schools in each state and territory who have received school grants to conduct science activities within their schools during National Science Week 2010 14-22 August.

The National Science Week state and territory representatives received well over 500 applications in total and unfortunately, due to limited funding, not all could be awarded. If you would like feedback on your application please contact your state or territory representative.



AUSTRALIAN CAPITAL TERRITORY

Amaroo School - Fun, hands on, science activities involving Yr 3-6 students every lunch time over science week. Activities will include working with magnets, electric circuits, fossils and rocks.

Charnwood-Dunlop Primary School – Charnwood-Dunlop celebrates Australian Biodiversity. A school week dedicated to Australian Biodiversity including presentations provided by ANU, CSIRO, ANPS, ANBG. Students will display and recreate what they have learnt through posters, speeches, PP presentations, dioramas and drawings (seed grant).

Maribyrnong Primary School – Science Every Day. Rotational activities for the whole school based on every day scientific phenomena such as sustainable energy investigations, electronics, pressure and the digestive system (school grant).

Mawson Primary School – Family Science Night. Students will display and demonstrate science experiments for the school and school community (school grant).

St. Michael’s Primary School – School science fair with 12 science activities and challenges to be held in school hall. Funding for a reptile display and Double Helix Membership (school grant).

Turner School – A whole school program using Primary Connections with reference to animal adaptations, habitats and environmental change culminating in a school science fair (school grant).



NEW SOUTH WALES

Condell Park High School – ‘Science Spectacular’ – a week of investigation, application and celebration of science in a variety of exciting, engaging and challenging ways (school grant).

Dareton Public School – Wacky, Weird and Wonderful ‘Mad Science Expo’ (school grant).

Eurongilly Public School - Eurongilly Family and Community Astronomy Night (school grant).

Holbrook Public School – Engaging, creative and hands-on science activities for primary students - led by secondary students, teachers, parents, interested community members and local industries (school grant)

Lisarow High School – Supporting biodiversity through renewable energy use (school grant).

Macintyre High School – ‘It’s our Future’ Project – developing programs for sustainability (school grant).

Mayfield East Public School – Producing energy using alternative forms to fossil fuels for electricity (seed grant).

Mudgee High School – Science Circus involving primary and secondary students (school grant).

Mummulgum Public School – School vegetable gardens and propagation (school grant).

Murwillumbah Public School – ‘Turning Green’ – investigating alternate energy sources (school grant).

Narara Public School – ‘The Valley Schools’ Science Challenge 2010’ – primary students from 6 local schools design and construct working models to compete in an inter-school science challenge (school grant).

Nemingha Public School – ‘E-POWER’ – Empowering students, teachers and the community to save energy (school grant).

Nowra High School – Annual Science Fair in the Shoalhaven Region – science investigation projects, displays, experiments and science competitions (seed grant).

Nowra East Public School – ‘Doing Things Together Day’  - all students from pre-school to Year 6 will be involved in a whole school event, learning teamwork as they participate in a series of science activities (school grant).

Quandialla Central School – Planning, building and preparing a student vegetable garden (school grant).

St. Andrew’s Christian School, Clarenza – Establishment of a sustainable vegetable garden, recycling centre and compost system (seed grant).

The Junction Public School – ‘The Art of Science’   - bringing art, science and the environment together in the context of biodiversity in the local area (seed grant).

Walcha Central School – Annual Middle School Science Fair for students at Walcha Central and surrounding small schools as well as parents and the broader community (school grant).

Wilkins Public School – ‘Discovering Biodiversity at Wilkins’. Discovering, monitoring and reporting on biodiversity at Wilkins from the microscopic to larger fauna and flora (seed grant).


NORTHERN TERRITORY

Casuarina Secondary College – Lunch-time practical activities during the week to raise awareness of Science and show that Science can be fun. Also tree planting to raise awareness of biodiversity (school grant).

Darwin High School – Using data loggers to collect information from the local area as the start of a long term study to build up useful ecological information over the years. Also a competition that uses the data to create a poster that considers implications of climate change on biodiversity in the area being studies (school grant).

Maningrida CEC – The school is cooperating with the local nursery to investigate suitable fruit and vegetable crops (both local and commercial) to grow in their remote town. The food would supply the local Aged Care facility (seed grant).

Palmerston Christian School – As part of their schools detailed Environmental Action Plan the school will be setting up an aquaponics system with help from several local companies and the local Council, to produce vegetables and fresh fish (seed grant).

St. Andrew’s Lutheran School – Primary school students will rotate through a variety of activities set up by the teachers (school grant).

St. John’s College – “Science in Sport” activities will be held during the school sports day. Purchase and/or hire of radar guns for clocking speed and thermal imaging equipment for seeing what’s going on with the athlete’s temperature (school grant).

Taminmin High School – A Science Expo. Students in Year 7,8 and9 will design and carry out an experiment or create an invention to show their peers (school grant).

The Essington School – Middle school students and their parents are invited to an Astronomy night with visiting Scientists and their equipment (school grant).

Wulgagi Primary School/Sanderson Middle School – The two schools will be running “Science mini labs” for two days for upper primary and Middle school students (seed grant).


QUEENSLAND

Aboriginal and Islander Independent Community School – Mini workshops. Composting, Worm Farms, Bokashi, Recycling (school grant).

Atherton State School – Environmental sustainability: Hands on activities and information displays (school grant).

Ayr State Primary School – Science fair (school grant).

Bajool State School – a week of science activities.  A program has been designed covering science as a career, science in the kitchen, a family science night, a science/maths community quiz night and science awards. We will have support of CQ university staff, Dr Peter Eastwell, Primary and Secondary teachers and local business staff (school grant).

Bauhinia State School – One day of activities and performances with science experiments based on forces and motions (school grant).

Beaudesert State School – School open day for school, invited schools, disability & aged care, parents & broader community. Solar vehicles, crystal making, biodiversity investigations, environmental audits & showcasing students' projects (school grant).

Belmont State School – Each teacher will design a science activity to be delivered across their year level. During Science Week the teachers will deliver their activity to other classrooms (school grant).

Berrinba East State School – Science expo (school grant).

Biboohra State School – Science day. Invite CSIRO to provide hands on activities (school grant).

Bohlevale State School – Science fair with hands on rotational activities (school grant).

Boonah State High School – Water Irrigation workshop. Three crops will be grown with different parts of water from a waterway. Groups must allocate water to get best results (school grant).

Brisbane State High School – Hosting a series of lecturettes and photo displays of past students who are now actively engaged in the medical scientific community (school grant).

Browns Plains State High School – Science Show as a career pathway to Yr 7 primary school students at 3 local feeder schools (school grant).

Bulimba State School – Science Immersion Day. Rotational activities focusing on biodiversity. Visiting UQ Scientist (school grant).

Caboolture State High School – Science Week celebrations with lunchtime demonstrations and activities (school grant).

Cairns School of Distance Education – Forensics science competition Yr 8-12 students (school grant).

Carmila State School – Science Fair with hands on experiments and rotational activities (school grant).

Centenary State High School – Lunchtime activities and Science Show for primary school & secondary schools (school grant).

Charters Towers State High School – Community Science Museum featuring exhibits from school departments and community sources (school grants).

Chelona State School – Science fair involving neighbouring schools (school grant).

Clover Hill State School – Science Fair and rotational science experiments and activities (school grant).

Cooroy State School – Hands on activities, displays, public debates and demonstrations (school grant).

Craigslea State School – Movie day, class display of science contest projects, mini assemblies, science picnic and visit to Arts Council (school grant).

Dalby State High School – A show for 5 schools with demonstrations and practical experiments (school grant).

Downlands Sacred Heart College – Lunch-time science extension activities over four weeks (school grant).

Fitzgerald State School – Demonstrations and hands on activities (school grant).

Ipswich State High School – Joint project with Ipswich SHS & Brassall SS to research, develop and construct a sun-dial (school grant).

Ipswich North State School – Science show to a range of schools in 1 COS Cluster. Real life situations & experiences in an interactive environment (school grant).

Isabella State School – Science day of investigations with theme of biodiversity (school grant).

Junction Park State School – Science activities rotation. Worm farm and compost. Science fair with peer demonstrations and guest speaker (school grant).

Karalee State School – Hands on science activities (school grant).

Kenmore State School – Sustainability Program ‘Go Green’. Setting up recycle stations and worm farms (school grant).

Kuluin State School – Science Circus with hands on science experiments and activities (school grant).

Logan Reserve State School – Science fair with school cluster. Experts visiting to advise and guide students on their projects (school grant).

Mt. Mee State School – ‘Mount Mee Goes Wild’ focusing on local species diversity and precarious survival of local native animals (school grant).

Mt. Molloy State School – Making a food garden using permaculture principles (school grant).

Mt. Warren Park State School – Night sky viewing for students and parents with Brisbane Astronomical Society in attendance (school grant).

Narangba Valley State High School – Science Expo showcasing student work to school and feeder primary schools (school grant).

Norfolk Village State School – Garden project (school grant).

North Rockhampton State High School – Mining focus investigations and experiments. Creating a model of mining site. Biodiversity focus hands on activities with guest speakers and expert panel forum (school grant).

Pimlico State School – Lunchtime lecture, quiz and inter-house problem solving competition (school grant).

Port Douglas State School – Science activities centred on the science strands of Energy and Change and Natural and Processed materials (school grant).

Prince of Peace Lutheran College – Demonstrations and practical activities with invited guest from CSIRO, science quiz & 2 x lab activities (school grant).

Railway Estate State School – Our new Greenhouse. Building 6 planting boxes. Planting seedlings and developing sprinkler system (school grant).

Southern Cross Catholic College – Science Fair, inventions competition, daily quizzes, visits from local experts. Science lab rotations and lunchtime fun (school grant).

St. Andrew’s Catholic College – Invite-a-scientist. Design 5 science investigations/challenges with one being based on biodiversity from ASTA Resource Book (school grant).

St. Catherine’s School – Week of experiments (school grant).

St. Clare’s School – Science on the Oval with local entomologist, police with radar gun and a Bureau of Sugar Experiment Station (school grant).

St. Gerard Majella Woree – Vegetable garden (school grant).

St. John Fisher College – Science trivia night (school grant).

St. Mary’s Catholic Primary School – Rotational activities, hands on experiments and investigations (school grant).

St. Paul’s School, Gracemere – Science Expo with hands on activities (school grant).

Kingston High School – Year 7s return to their primary school to do experiments for Year 6s (school grant).

Marine Discovery Centre – teacher PL day where students do marine science activities to promote science education (school grant).

Montello Primary School – Lunchtime science activities for the whole school for Science Week (school grant).

Newtown High School – Scienmax film festival, science expo and guest speakers with numerous outside guests invited (school grant).

Rokeby High School – Biodiversity monitoring of the Clarence Plains rivulet with support of outside agencies (seed grant).

Rosebury District High School – ‘Seed to Plate’ program. Whole school and whole community project to establish an integrated program (school grant).

Roseneath Primary School – Film and edit a science video of others doing experiments. To be used in later classes (school grant).

Scottsdale High School – Exploring careers in science. Other schools, scientists and government organizations will be invited to attend (school grant).

Southern Support School – Students with special needs will do science activities with local college students who will come into the school to help (school grant).

South Hobart Primary School – Sustainability makes a difference – Term focus using Science Week as a celebration with a sharing day for all classes (school grant).

St. Helen’s District High School – SIS people to run workshops of a practical nature with students.

St. Mary’s District High School – Science fair with stall that younger students ‘book in’ to see (school grant).

Alinjarra Primary School, Alexander Heights – The school will conduct a science and mathematics learning journey (school grant).

Beachlands Primary School, Geraldton – ‘Psycho Science Circus Environmental Science Day’. K-7 whole school science and mathematics activities. Four local schools invited to participate (seed grant).

Bertram Primary School – Integrated science and mathematics activity week. The Kwinana Federation of Schools consists of seven local schools working together with the local community and industry partners (seed grant).

Cable Beach Primary School, Broome – The ‘Blast Lab’ interschool quiz competition (school grant).

Christmas Island District High School, Christmas Island – Environmental research of Australian ecosystems (school grant).

Glendale Primary School, Warwick – The Glendale biodiversity and wind energy tabloid involving community scientists and the construction of a learnscape trail through the school bush area (seed grant).

Greenwood Senior High School – Primary Science Roadshow. Students from five local primary schools, with the assistance of a high school student will present a science show to their schools (school grant).

John Curtin College of the Arts, Fremantle – Science shows, quizzes, green day, brain break morning tea, biodiversity and planting and growing activities (school grant).

Little Grove Primary School, Albany – ‘Why is it so?’ Exploration of scientific concepts in an innovative way (school grant).

Mandurah Baptist College – Demonstrations of science based on phenomenon (school grant).

Newton Moore Senior High School, Bunbury – Community Science Fair celebrating science which will involve students from primary to high school level, parents, and industry partners (school grant).

Settlers Primary School, Baldivis – Science Week Tabloid Challenge (school grant).
