SCIps Report
In 2001 the Australian Government provided $2.5 million over three years towards a National School Science
Project, in response to the recommendations of the report entitled The Status and Quality of Teaching and
Learning of Science in Australian Schools (Goodrum, Hackling, Rennie, 2001). The project aimed to:
1. promote awareness of science education
2. develop and trial curriculum resources and professional development models (CASSP); and
3. develop a resource bank of assessment tools for teachers (SEAR).
In respect to the first of these aims, (DEST) contracted the Australian Science Teachers Association (ASTA) to
develop, trial and evaluate a Science Awareness Raising Model and set of resources that could be used by
schools and their communities.
